How HighWire Works To meet the challenges of successfully implementing business applications over the Internet, HighWire Software engineers started with an analysis of the whole Web environment, including the dependence on HTML browsers for access. They recognized that as long as they accepted the existing technology paradigm, they were tied to the existing constraints. That’s what everyone else who’s looked at the problem has done. But by thinking outside-the-box, HighWire Software realized that the real solutionone that would meet the needs of both developers and userslay in developing a new paradigm, a new architecture. HighWire technology creates a genuine Windows environment on the user’s PC as it accesses the business application on the server. All interface interaction is provided by a client application which resides on the user’s PC, and the interface commands resident on the server we call RGIL, our Remote Graphic Interface Library. Together these programs provide a development and deployment platform that dramatically simplify application development by placing control of the client-resident GUI in the server program, and delivering a truly responsive, custom Windows interface. The developer uses a high level set of commands to completely control the Graphic User interface, and continues to use popular languages for the server-side application, such as C, PERL. Development time of client interfaces is dramatically reduced. Using RGIL, a developer can display a text or table window or an entire menu bar in just 8 characters. Unlike Web systems that transmit tens of thousands of bytes per page, RGIL is over 95% efficient over the life of a typical session. The result is incredible speed and responsiveness. Unlike solutions that add middleware servers and other expensive technology to try to overcome current browser limitations, HighWire eliminates these work-arounds, reduces server application complexity, and simplifies client interface development, often reducing total development costs by 50%. |
